MARK MCNULTY, LOREN ROBERTS SHARE THE LEAD AT -11 AFTER TWO ROUNDS AT THE BOEING CLASSIC
They both started the day at -4, both shot rounds of 65 and now both Mark McNulty and Loren Roberts sit atop the leaderboard at -11 heading in to the final round of the 2009 Boeing Classic. McNulty was first in the clubhouse and led for much of the day with four birdies on the front nine, but Roberts made a late push with four birdies in his last five holes to match McNulty and play his way in to the final group on Sunday.
LEADERBOARD CROWDED WITH BIGGEST NAMES IN THE GAME
Sunday is going to be a battle as many of the premier players in the game are poised to make a run at the leaders. Sitting just behind McNulty and Roberts are:
Bernhard Langer -9
Mark O’Meara -9
Craig Stadler -8
Dan Forsman -8
John Cook -6
Nick Price -5
Keeping up on the former Champions:
- 2005 Champion David Eger equaled the best round of the day (along with several players) with a 65 to get to -4 and T10 for the tournament, 7 shots back of the leaders.
- 2006 and 2008 Champion Tom Kite dropped in the standings after posting a one-over-73 on Saturday. Kite now sits nine shots back of the leaders at -2.
- 2007 Champion Denis Watson bettered his score by five strokes from his round on Friday, but still sits toward the lower portion of the field at T59.
20,000 FANS ATTEND SATURDAY’S SECOND ROUND
Despite drizzly conditions in the morning, by mid-afternoon the sun broke through the clouds and an enthusiastic crowd of 20,000 attended Saturday’s round at the Boeing Classic.
THE REWARD WAS WORTH THE RISK FOR MOST WHO WENT FOR IT AT 14 ON SATURDAY
On Day Two of the Boeing Classic, 22 of the 78-player field challenged the canyon and most came away happy for having taken the risk. 14 of the 22 posted a score of birdie or better – including Jim Thorpe’s lone eagle – while 5 recorded a par and only three took a bogey or double bogey. Unlike Friday tough when not a single ball fell in to the canyon, one ball was fed to the canyon and one was lost in the woods beyond the green.
GIL MORGAN’S DRIVE LEAVES SPECTATOR FROZEN
Here at the Boeing Classic spectators truly get “up close and personal” with Champions Tour professionals. Spectator Larry Pearson was watching Gil Morgan tee-off at hole 1 when Morgan’s ball proceeded to bounce off a hill, hit the left shoulder of a bystander and land in Pearson’s sweatshirt hood. Shouts from the crowd and rule officials “not to move” left Pearson shocked and still as a statue. Morgan received a drop at the location and finished the hole leaving the crowd with a good laugh.
SATURDAY GETS STARTED WITH 3K “WALK WITH THE WIVES FOR CHARITY”
The clouds and mist on Saturday morning didn’t faze the Seahawks and Champions Tour wives, who led a group of walkers throughout the TPC Snoqualmie ridge course for the first ever “Walk with the Wives for Charity.” Shannon Mora, Linda Ruskell, Kristy Kite, Peggy Gilder and cardiologists from Virginia Mason began at the 10th tee and battled the hills of the back nine to finish at the top of Hole 18 for a heart healthy start to the day. All proceeds from the event will benefit The Heart Institute at Virginia Mason Medical Center.
FINAL ROUND TO START AT 11:40AM, FINAL GROUP AT 1:40PM; TROPHY PRESENTATION AT 6:25PM
The final round will start on Saturday at 11:40am. The final group featuring Leaders Mark McNulty and Loren Roberts along with Bernhard Langer will tee off at 1:40pm. Fans will likely have a tough time deciding who to follow, however, as the 1:30 group includes Mark O’Meara, Craig Stadler and Dan Forsman. The complete list of pairings is available at www.BoeingClassic.com.
The 2009 Boeing Classic Champion will be presented with his flight jacket and trophy in a ceremony on the 18th green that is expected to start at 6:25pm. If time permits, The Golf Channel will also cover the ceremony on their live Sunday coverage, which is scheduled for 4:00pm-6:30pm.
